Hello fellow actors!

I used my years of experience in New York City theater to start a website that shares insider tips and candid advice with aspiring actors. It discusses theater, film, and commercials, and provides tips for getting started and moving ahead in the industry. It's completely free and we've got a great community! Check it out at www.actortips.com

Actually, my tip page got so popular that I decided to start my own online business, dedicated to starting tips pages. If blogs and internet business is more up your alley, you can check it out www.tipzu.com

W. Kamau Bell's Solo Performance Class Begins Again in April

W. KAMAU BELL'S SOLO PERFORMANCE CLASS

ABOUT THE CLASS:
Started in 2005, this 8 session course (over ten weeks) is designed to develop 15-20 minute professional level solo theater pieces using a variety of writing and performance techniques. Each student will create a unique and personal performance piece that will culminate in a public theater performance at the end of the course. The class is recommended for performers of all disciplines, including actors, writers, comedians, spoken word artists, musicians and dancers. People of all levels of experience are welcome, from those who have never been on stage before to those preparing a piece for a professional production or audition.

ABOUT W. KAMAU BELL:
W. Kamau Bell has been a Bay Area comedian, writer, and director for more than ten years. Kamau is a favorite at Cobbs Comedy Club, The Punch Line, The Porchlight Storytelling Series, and is half of Siskel & Negro on Live 105. Kamau has appeared at The Just For Laughs Festival in Montreal, on Comedy Centrals Premium Blend, and Byron Allens Comics Unleashed. Also he is featured in The Soft Skull Press publication What Would Bill Hicks Say? Kamau has been profiled in The San Francisco Chronicle on three separate occasions, including not ironically during Black History Month. Kamau is currently hard at work performing his debut solo show, "The W. Kamau Bell Curve: Ending Racism in About an Hour". The SF Guardian declared, "W. Kamau Bell plays against type and comes with not only the insights you wish you had spewed first but also the wit.." The SF Weekly called him smart, stylish, and very much in the mold of politically outspoken comedians like Dave Chappelle and Margaret Cho, although he was more excited that they called him handsome. However, Kamau is most proud of being the leader of The Solo Performance Workshop.

ONE-HOUR FREE CONSULTATION:
Sign up through Brown Paper Tickets and receive an hour of free consultation w/ Kamau to help prepare for the class.

aberrant behavior-auditions saturday the 19th 2263 mission (between 18th & 19th) 3:30-6:30

I'm making a film, that will be somewhat explicit in parts. Also, there will be imagery that needs nudity.
I am afraid that I will not be able to cut the content of the movie script, even if I find actors interested .You can e-mail me with rates, photos, questions, etc. If your an actor or actress who has worked in nudity and/or sexual situations, is comfortable with it, and would like to take on a feature narrative film as a major role please e-mail me or show up to the auditions. The two main roles are the ones that require it but there are others. If you would like to be featured in sequences that do not involve the main characters, but are part of dreamlike imagery you can either show up to the audition, or e-mail me with link to your work. Best place to e-mail:
theperiodmovie@yahoo.com

Thanks-
Jason

Here is the original posting:

I have a new movie called "Aberrant Behavior" auditioning Sat. 1/19 3:30-6:3- at the Dark Room SF 2263 Mission off of 19th and Mission@ 3:30 - 6:30. (My first movie "the period" came out through Sub Rosa Cinema can be seen/bought at Netflix www.myspace.com/theperiodmovie, as well as various other outlets)
Aberrant Behavior, is basically about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis. If you can't make it to the auditions, you can send me a head shot with resume, or whatever you want. We can then decide when and where to meet.

I will be hiring for many roles, all ages (over 18) races, sizes, etc. But here are the main characters:
Main Characters:
Victor Muertos: (Mid to late twenties) Half Mexican/Half white (Half latino/half white will probably work). Black hair, down to chin and five o clock shadow. (Flexible though). Tall and thin but not too thin.
Dark, brooding, depressed, prone to long winded sarcastic, cynical rants. Living off the state for mental depression, and addiction, but eventually breaks himself from the state. He hates the state, and normal life in general. He hates almost everything. He is sort of sloppy hipster, slightly emo, slight slight slight goth meets street kid. Light or no body mod, piercings, etc. He eventually lives on the street because of choice. He falls in love with Aiko.

Aiko Zumbi (18-early twenties or look like it) Half Japanese/Half German (or Japanese, or half Japanese/Half white). Shorter than Victor, thin but still slightly curvy.
Street kid with a bit of dark hippie. Has been sexually abused as a child. Prone to violence. Prone to long winded rants, or sometimes just total silence. Dark, cynical, with a very bleak view of life. Body mods, tattoo's, piercings, fine. Dreaded or colored hair fine as well. Actually preffered.
She falls in love with Victor.

Emma May (20's to 30's) Actress must be thin, because character is anorexic. Very fake, superficial, manic laughing. Very self deluded. She doesn't really see her anorexia as a problem, she think she looks great though she's obviously dieing and goes to extremes to keep herself thin. She is always dressed up elegantly and thinks of herself as a proper lady even when doing something grotesque . She is a head executive at a advertising/pr firm that she gets a Victor a brief job at, through meeting him in a class over there mutual addictions. (Brief Nudity /Partial a few times)

Caseworker Joe (30's-40's) Written has hispanic, but open. Larger guy, tall, built like a shed, a bit fat but not flabby fat. Very coarse, to the point, direct "Take no shit" kind of guy. Very normal, buys into the whole big house in the suburbs, good job, etc. He is Victor's Caseworker, and is tired of Victor's Shit, and believes he is not trying to quit. (None)

Glitters- a gay gangster rapper, take everything that's a cliche and horrible about it and flip it so that it's gay (some, will also need male models)

Pedida Muertos-Victors Mother. A nearly catatonic morally apprehensive drug addict who's always sleeping with random guys and ignoring her child (Some nudity/sexual situations can be negotiated to less)

And then random visuals, nudes for some flashback scenes (of some sort of psuedo porn the main characer shot) a girl that Victor sleeps with before he falls in love with Zumbi (requires brief nudity/sexuality) and some body part imagery that will not feature the face of the actor/actress, among other thing

thanks for reading

Is anyone here belong to financial core in SAG?

I have given it a lot of thought and consideration, and it simply comes down to - I can't pay my bills without working. Sounds simple I know, however, I am not even given the chance to audition for SAG jobs, so I really want to join financial core. Does anyone have any experience with this or would like to share any suggestions? Also, what are the steps I need to take to join Fi-Core? I'm afraid to call up SAG and ask them in fear they will get mean over me wanting to drop the union and go for Fi-Core. ?
Anyone?
Thanks, and with so much gratitude for anyone who can share,
~Crystal

So I think I have the steps narrowed down now (fingers crossed cuz they don't explain it very well on the site). Please do as follows and vote for me as many times as they will allow:

1. go towww.freetobefamous.com
2. register with their site and create a username and password
3. log in
4. on the main page where it says search videos type in dollita
5. my video will pop up and you press play and watch it
6. underneath the video window is a hand forming the thumbs up and it says vote, click on that
7. it will say thank you your vote has been submitted and then it will apply that vote to my account

I still have no word from the webmaster on how many times you can vote but I know you can't vote more than once a day for sure. Sorry it is such a pain and so much work on a daily basis but I need all of you to help me out.

Thanks in advance for all your votes.
XXOO

I wrote a spec, what now?

i wrote an spec episode for a horror show that is currently on television and will be aired next season on American pay per view stations. Although, i understand that i am supposed to not show the producers of that horror show this spec, does anyone know another producer who might read it? Has anyone ever written a spec for television and got to be a part of its production?

Are there actor writers currently in televsion out there?

I'm really curious,

Reality TV Show Idea - We need help!!!

My name is Thomas Hand and I'm the CEO of the Great American Royal Circus, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. I am seeking help/information pertaining to an idea I have for a reality TV show. The show will consist of talented and attractive performers, travel, auditions, glamour, mystic, curiosity and behind the scenes of a real circus - which will include but not limited to: city officials asking for illegal handouts and plenty of circus drama. The Great American Royal Circus is looking to clean up the circus industry and we can’t think of a better way to do it other than on a reality TV show “Real Life on The Circus”.

We have copyrighted the idea, however, the problem we’re having, we don’t have a clue how to go about contacting the right people/networks. Any suggestions and/or help would be greatly appreciated. There might even be a job in it for you.

For more information about our circus please visit www.nonprofitcircus.com

Please feel free to contact me directly at CEO@nonprofitcircus.com

Sincerely,
Thomas Hand

Here is some glorious news about a Hallmark movie that will premier tomorrow night. ~ Happy Holidays!

THE CHRISTMAS CARD
“The Christmas Card” a Hallmark Channel Original Holiday movie, premieres Saturday, December 2 at 9 p.m then repeats at 11 p.m. on the Hallmark TV Channel. This movie will air again on Thursday, December 7 at 9m as well.

"THE CHRISTMAS CARD"
Multiple Emmy® Award winner Ed Asner (Lou Grant -The Mary Tyler Moore Show”, John Newton (Desperate Housewives, Melrose Place) & Alice Evans (102 Dalmations) star in this heartwarming holiday story about a career soldier stationed overseas who takes a leave of absence to search for the young woman who has written him a deeply touching personalized, but anonymous Christmas card. When Cody (Newton) arrives in the picturesque California town from which the card was sent, he soon meets and falls in love with Faith (Evans), the girl who sent the card, and he is practically accepted as a new member of the family by her parents (Asner & Nettleton) as he helps them save the family Christmas tree farm. But there’s one major roadblock to happily-ever-after: Faith is already engaged to be married!

Glorinda Marie plays ‘Molly’ the sassy diner waitress in this touching Holiday film!

Beginning in March next year, we are inviting 9 people to cruise from Bodrum, Turkey along the Turkish coast, Cyprus, Athens, Alexandria on a share expenses basis (very, very inexpensive). We began a documentary in Paris and Turkey last year, and now as it gets warmer in Turkey we are going to complete it. We have a US distributor, and everyone involved will share in profits. It could be quite profitable for you and a real life changer. We are in pre-production of three others...one on black jazz in Paris after WWII until now. We have a Turkish captain/crew/cook on our 70' Gulet, 6 double staterooms still available, all with their own head (toilet and shower). Qualifications? Simply to be able to get along with people. Age? Our producer is 60, our editor is 25. Age inmaterial if you are young in spirit. If you have video experience (HD MiniDV PAL and Final Cut Pro, writing) all the better, but we are doing this to perhaps expand the focus of our documentary which is based on the mystical aspects of Alexander the Great - Title: Force of Evidence. Creative people get free reign as long as they don't sink the ship or the project. We are interested to add some human interest...profound, provocative, funny...to the program, so film making experience in not a requirement. Come for a week or two months. Email me for details.

Hello,
I have scripts that you can basically buy your role in provided the casting director and director likes your talent. Scripts are with established filmmakers and production companies.
Send your online reel link to me with a short letter of interest and your IMDB link.
I would also be interested if you have a script from another production company or friend that you would like to invest in that is seeking funding.
Thank you,

What are the BEST Universities?

I'm having an awful time finding information on line for the best university programs. My son is starting to apply to colleges, he wants to double major: acting and film. Of course NYU is the first choice, we've also been to Juilliard, which was a little too sterile feeling and not enough of a liberal arts school. I've heard that Northwestern and DePaul are good, I know that Carnegie Melon was, is it still? Which schools in California are best? I'd be so grateful for any advice, school names, or even tips about how to find out. It just seems that whenever I try to search, I get all kinds of garbage, like "Jolene-Marie's school of Dramatics" or ads for sending off the equivalent of college tuition for online instructional courses :)

Thanks so much!

Does Anyone Still Do Old Fashioned Lightshows

I was lucky enough to grow up in the Bay Area in the 60's and 70's and am now in charge of putting together our schools first ever "Stoner Reunion".
I would like to know if anyone still does the old fashioned lightshows with the oil and food coloring and plates? Can someone teach me how to do this, or about how much would it cost to have someone do it for a couple of hours?
We're reuniting a couple of bands that my friends had from that time so this would be a great addition.
Let me know because I am clueless when it comes to this.

TEMP LIVE/WORK SPACE NEEDED URGENTLY

TEMP LIVE/WORK SPACE NEEDED URGENTLY

Hi I am the Australian Director of the Vociferous Productions Independent feature film

“What A Great Idea”

www.imdb.com/title/tt0762147/

The production is 90% complete and we are in negations and shopping for finishing funds. It is a very unique project and we have strong leads for festivals and other markets.
This is actually a great opportunity to own a piece of a project that is well into production and get a foot in the door of the Independent Film World.

For many reasons the production is taking longer than anticipated and I now find myself in the awkward position of having no available cash and nowhere to live and work.

In or near Los Angeles and close to public transportation.

I am willing to offer
- An Executive Producer Credit…
- Festival rights and screening and wrap party invitations
- And an Equity in the project equal to 150% of agreed market rent value

In lieu of cash; for the room rooms or space, .to any individual, landlord or company that can provide a place for me to live and work for 3-4 months…In a home apartment or livable commercial building

Other details, conditions and terms can be discussed or negotiated but first please call our Production Manager; Patricia Morice on 626 792 2143 – ASAP

Or respond via Email to:
vociferous@fastmail.fm
with a phone number included in the body of the Email message

This matter is urgent as I have a place to stay until the end of June only

Yours Sincerely
Rokk Lattanzio
Vociferous Productions.

The Peoples Party (a reality tv show)

The Peoples Party... is it really possible to have a peoples party at this point in time? A party who's candidate was chosen, and supported by the American people?
Yes... it really is possible. And high time if you ask me.
When I was in school they told me I could be anything I wanted. Even the president of the United States. But they never taught me how. Oh sure, we had a class president and all that, (and I seem to remember something about a cartoon bill that kept getting vetoed or something), but somehow I just don't think it's the same thing. But I have asked dozens of people (smart ones too) if they new how to go about being president if they chose to. None of them had the slightest clue. Not that I would ever want to be the president. I can't even ballance my own check book, (or remember if that cartoon bill ever got passed or not) let alone trying to balance the budget for a nation. However, I have met quite a few people along my journeys that I thought had all the attributes I would like to see in a president. Strong, responsible, honorable people, always seeming to naturally look out for the needs of others, less fortunate, and weaker than themselves, while at the same time accomplishing great feats of productivity, (including balancing their check books). Ive met them in all walks of life. All shapes, sizes, sexes, and colors. Proud Americans, all of them. According to our constitution they have the right to run for president. The only question is... how? Well check it out...
A Letter to Michael Moore
Hey Mike,
I hope all is going good with the new project. I can't express to you how much I appreciate your work. You both inspire me and give me hope that someday we the People will find our voice again and take our country back. On that note, I have a great Idea I’d like to share with you. This is an idea I’ve spent serious time thinking about. I’d like to humbly ask for your help. The idea needs shepherding from someone of your caliber. So here it is…

“The People’s Party”
A reality television game show
by Alan Abbott
Contestants will compete for a chance to run for President of the United States for the People’s Party.
Possible contestants, chosen from the general public, are asked (via television & radio) to send in a video tape or DVD, 3 minutes or less explaining why they or the person they are nominating should be considered as a presidential candidate.
The show will be run Documentary/American Idol/ style. The cameras follow each contestant on their quest. Throughout the campaign contestants and their entourage travel together, eat together, stay at the same hotels, and share the same campaign headquarters in the convention rooms at the hotels where they stay.
The American public will have the opportunity to vote for the candidate of their choice by telephone and the contestants with the lowest number of votes steps down each week.
The winner of the show wins the candidacy for the Peoples Party, and actually runs for president of the United States of America.

That is the basic idea. I see it as an entertaining way to empower the people to establish their own party, educate the public about what it takes to run for president. Most importantly, it will give the people a chance to take their country back.

I have been developing the show for over a year and have a lot more material. I didn’t want to bombard you with it all right now. I have made several trips to and from L.A. (from Maui) trying to contact you through “more appropriate means” than e-mail, but to no avail. So here we are.

This is actually the second e-mail I have sent you, but I fear the first may have gotten lost in the crowd, as I know you try to respond to all your e-mails. So just to give you a heads up, I am going to ask a few friends to give me a hand in getting your attention. After all, election time is around the corner, and I’d like you to be given the first opportunity to give the country back to the people. Hope you don’t mind. Please feel free to e-mail me or call me at; 808-264-0984. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
Alan

We The People
Really can make this happen. More impossible dreams have come true. But we have to work together. Together... the American people can do anything.
I am asking all of you to please copy this entire post and send it to michael@michaelmoore.com then send it to everyone you know.
Michael Moore is my first choice, but I know he is not everybody's cup of tea. Do you have someone in mind you like better for the task of producing, directing, and/or hosting The Peoples Party? Copy and send this entire post to them, and tell them so. But please keep in mind that the show, and everything written here is copywritten so please don't try to pass it off as your own, you'll just get yourself in a lot of trouble. Do however feel free to share with as many people as you want. In fact please do
I sent this letter to Michael Moore on May 19th, 2006 but Mikes a busy guy. He is currently shooting another feature documentary, and I'm sure the shooting schedule is very labor intensive. Not ot mention the amount of e-mails the guy must get every day. Then when he does finaly get a chance to read them, I'm sure he has a priority list of some kind. Either way, he has not returned this e-mail yet.
But Michael is not the only person that is important to reach. If we are going to make a difference we have to work together, and spread the word to everyone.
Thank you all very much.
Sincerely, Alan
Power To The People

Friends have asked me to post some shots from this short production. Seemed like a good time to add my voice to this Tribe, as I have been following the topics here for awhile.

I just completed a feature called "Disturbing Images" and am looking to get it out to theaters. I'm finding some theaters that are friend toward independant production companies, so I'm sending out screeners to them.

Does anyone have any insight into this process? Are there companies or agents that shop movies around to theaters for production companies?

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

I'll be cross-posting this, please forgive the repitition...

Thanks!

Seminar: “What is Producing” Tuesday, December 13, 2005 - SFSU Burk Hall 229 or remote access video stream

opic: “What is Producing”

Tuesday, December 13, 2005

6:00 – 7:00 PM

Burk Hall 229 or
remote connections (internet):

We will stream using Quicktime 7. Launch Quicktime, under File, choose
Open URL and type or paste rtsp://at1.sfsu.edu/Ujlaki.sdp

Hello Everyone,

Once Upon a time in a Digital Village is a distance learning project that will be hosting Stephen Ujlaki, Chairman of SFSU's Cinema Department. I am organizing this event as a project for a graduate Distance Education class. All ITEC and Cinema students, along with alumni and others with an interest in Film Producing are welcome to participate.

On Tuesday Dec. 13th, 2005 between 6 pm and 7 pm, Prof. Ujlaki will be giving a one hour intensive "What is Producing" seminar, during the 442 Cinema class in Producing Film and visual media. This is a highly sought after advanced class in the art, and business, of Producing Film and other media projects that are related to film and video production.

If you have ever wondered what types of contracts, talent releases, and various waivers are needed to produce a film or documentary piece that can get distribution or be allowed into film festivals, then this is a rare opportunity to learn and ask questions from an industry profession. An industry professional who is the Chair of SFSU Cinema Dept. and dedicated to pulling away the "veil" of the Film Industry juggernaut's inner workings so students can approach their career with a solid knowledge of industry standards and not a pocket full of mysteries and rumors.

A portion of this project will be conducted in the Collaboratorium (Burk Hall Room 229) with students participating through two-way video and text conferencing. There will be full video and audio support in the Collaboratorium. To use text as a remote communication tool, we will be using Skype (if you want to connect remotely using Skype you will have to download Skype (from www.skype.com) and login use the Skype Chat utility) - we may arrange a second option also, email Robert (me) to get an update on this.

To be included in this project please RSVP to; rlf4productions@gmail.com, as feeds will be limited (to the first 200 online participants), as will the seats at the Collaboratorium – we may arrange special seating in select cases as needed for those alumni and students who are involved with media production or who maybe for their work or program.

***If you are a Tribe member note that (and which Tribe - ei.: Film makers, DV, editing, etc.) in your email and I will do my best to get you all set up. Please contact me before 3pm Tues. as I will be running through the spec. test after that time to see how our streaming video transfer rate is clocking, as well as testing our feed.***

A bit about film producer Stephen Ujlaki, chair of SFSU Cinema Department:

Stephen Ujlaki, a producer of more than 25 feature films, made-for-cable movies and documentaries, was recently named professor and chair of the San Francisco State University Cinema Department, named one of the nation's top film schools last year by Entertainment Weekly.

As vice president of development and production for HBO Pictures from

1983 to 1988, Ujlaki supervised script development, production and post-production for more than 25 films including "Baja Oklahoma"

(Julia Roberts), "Last Innocent Man" (Ed Harris) and "Act of Vengeance" (Charles Bronson).

"Film production involves many of the same administrative, logistical and people skills: ensuring that financial and creative input into the screenplay is heard, keeping everyone happy without going over budget or hurting the picture, resolving conflicts, and maintaining strong leadership and direction," said Chairman Ujlaki.

Ujlaki was most recently president of Panarea Productions, where he produced such feature films as "Loch Ness" (Ted Danson), "Hot Spot"

(Don Johnson, directed by Dennis Hopper) and "Courage Mountain"

(Charlie Sheen) as well as numerous HBO feature films including "Stiletto Dance" (Eric Roberts), "Xchange" (Stephen Baldwin) and "Hostile Intent" (Rob Lowe).

Previously, Ujlaki headed the European Feature and Television Production division for Stone Group France, a production studio owned by actor Michael Douglas. Reporting directly to Douglas, Ujlaki was responsible for bringing productions to the studio, managing film budgets, overseeing co-production partners and managing all personnel and film crews.

"San Francisco State can be known as more than just the 'independent film school,'" said Ujlaki, who founded the film program at Franconia College in New Hampshire and has also taught at the American Film Institute and Brandeis University. "A degree in cinema could also provide a wealth of career opportunities in the film industry. If one does not wish to pursue a completely independent path, there are many other marketable skills that can be developed into such careers as writing, producing, editing, directing and post-production."

!help! How do shows make money

hello,
I have a quick question for you. I was wondering how a television program makes money from ad spots. Do they directly pay for their spot on tv and then recover the fee via advertisers that they recruit, or is it the over all cable company/network that would by the program and then get advertisment to surround. Does this in fact change depending on the program or market. The information is pretty crutial to me write now, as I am working as an intern in the industry. While I run a magazine down here in denver it is a bit different. Thanks for your time.

acting class recommendations at SF Bay area community colleges?

Anyone have recommendations for quality acting courses taught in the San Francisco east or north bay at community colleges? Id like to get back into learning, developing acting though cant afford the fees for most private and group acting classes ive heard about.
I had started attending Napa Valley Colleges basic acting class last year, but moved farther south during it and was unable to finish it. The teacher seemed competent and focused, which i appreciated.
Though some people dont feel the difference warrents distinction, I am more interested in the subtler, natural feeling often found taught and expressed in acting for film rather then the exagerated, overly theatrical or shakesperian melodrama often found in classes focused associated with many theater or drama classes.
Im a relative beginner in acting, with only a few basic acting classes since 1985.
And prefer classes taught / held in the east or north bay, rather then san francisco as the commute to sf is too much and too expensive & unpredictable for parking, which is an extra hassle i dont want right now.

Any recommendations are appreciated.
Help those currently living with AIDS

Okay so here’s the story,
Amazing! Unbelievable! What an incredible challenge to undertake! You must be crazy! Maybe, but whatever your opinion, I, Halima Leyfer, am committed to participate in the New Orleans marathon. That is 26.2 miles of sweat, soul, and maybe a few tears as I cross the finish line. Of course I am not doing this cold. Besides running at least bi-weekly on my own, I will be doing at almost 500 miles over the six months prior to the marathon. All thanks to the National AIDS Marathon Training Program which raises money for AIDS Project Los Angeles (APLA) to provide vital AIDS services in Los Angeles County.
Here are some facts that you may not have realized. AIDS is the worst epidemic humankind has ever faced. The virus infects 14,000 people every day, 1600 of which are children. Los Angeles County represents 29 percent of the population of California and 35 percent of its cumulative AIDS cases. Between 54,000 to 57,000 people are estimated to be living HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County. By this estimate, there are enough people living with HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles to fill Dodger Stadium. One out of five people with HIV in Los Angeles do not know they are infected. There are 2,000 new HIV infections each year in Los Angeles. In 2004, approximately 6,100 people living with HIV/AIDS accessed APLA’s direct services.
But why am I doing it? Well, it’s a good cause and I get to go to New Orleans during Mardi Gras. Honestly, those reasons are not enough for me to push myself to either get to the point of being able to run/walk 26.2 miles or to run/walk 26.2 miles. I want to get in shape! I want to feel that sense of accomplishment after crossing the finish line! Most importantly, I need to build self-respect and self-love and I believe facing the amount of dedication it will take to accomplish this marathon will give me all of that.
A little about APLA. APLA is the largest provider of direct services to people living with HIV/AIDS in Los Angeles County. The money raised through the AIDS Marathon will allow APLA to continue to provide vital services to more than 10,000 men, women, and children. Programs such as prevention and education, food banks, dental care, housing assistance, home health care and many other programs will continue to help people in our community live a better life.
It’s really amazing! However, it does not come cheap. I need to raise a minimum of $3,000 by November 18th and I would love to raise more. For this, I need your help. Any donation you can make would be amazing! The more the better. You can even give more than once! Go to www.aidsmarathon.com at any time of the day or night. Just click on the “Sponsor A Runner” option, and enter my name (Halima Leyfer) or my runner number (5030). Remember, anything you donate is completely tax deductible so don’t hold back. $50, $100, or more would be greatly appreciated!
If you are unable to make a donation presently, there are other ways you can help. Tell your friends and colleagues about what I am doing and how they can help. Volunteer you r time on my behalf at the weekend training sites and I’ll earn money that way. If you have any advice or ideas, I would love to hear them.
One more thing, many corporations have matching gifts programs. All you have to do is check with your human resources department and you’ll quickly double your donation! I don’t want to take up too much more of you time. Thank you so much for you consideration.

seeking contract advice...

Hi everyone,

Here's my situation: I'm directing my first feature-length indy movie. I have about 35 actors involved, including a few SAG members. I have NO budget and noone is getting paid unless the movie actually gets picked up and makes money.

I've had a few of the actors asking whether the project will be SAG deferred. I had a couple of other people involved that were supposed to be handling this but they dropped the ball leaving me to pick it up and deal with this myself. I don't know much about the process and am seeking advice on the procedure.

I have talked to SAG already and they just changed contracts. The only contract they offer that has a salary deferred agreement is the "student" project, but that only can be applied if it's a short (30 minutes or less). The next one up is the "Ultra-Low" budget contract but you have to pay the actors $100 a day along with retirement contributions and a bunch of other stuff I can't afford. SAG used to offer an experimental contract that would've fit this project but they eliminated that contract.

I want to offer my actors some peace of mind in the form of a contract but am not sure what I can do about this situation. SAG doesn't seem too friendly to the indy filmmaker that has no budget, so it seems like they're out.

Any suggestions?

Dumb question about non-union extra wages...

Hey tribers.
I recently did some work as an extra on The Sopranos. It had been a long time since I'd done anything, as I've just returned to the business after many years away. The job came to me in a fairly lucky and 'random' way, and I was very glad to be back on set.

I am not union at present. I never did quite make SAG or AFTRA actually, even when I was doing a lot of work. I was more about theatre. I knew that my wages for this Sopranos gig would not be huge, however...

I WAS SHOCKED by how paltry my paycheck was!

I swear I made twice as much, for half as many hours, ten years ago!

Does anyone know what the current pay rate is for non-union background actors? (Not a featured extra, no dialog, no smoke pay or rain pay or wardrobe pay. Just the absolute basic pay scale for non-union players.) Does it vary? Is it possibly lower for a cable drama like The Sopranos than for feature films? Does it depend on other variables? Could it really be so little? I expected more than twice what I got.

I'd be very grateful for any info on this, and any other advice for a guy returning to TV and film after ten years away. I'm a bit baffled actually. Have things changed that much?

thanks much,
love and Light,
Justice

Creative and CHEAP photographer (NYC) needed now!

Hey tribers.
I am a New York based actor just returning to the business after several years away. This time I want headshots that show off what makes me unique. It's always my edgy rocker look that gets me work, so I don't want pix that look like anyone else's.

At present I am way broke, and am hoping for a photographer that will want to expand his portfolio with some creative sexy rock-inspired shots that I can use too. Any recommendations? Any photogs out there in need of a tall male model with tattoos, piercings, and a mohawk? Any info greatly appreciated.

Thanks much.
love and Light,
Justice

fans of SPUN

GALAXIE PICTURES is currently developing 'Unfiltered', the directorial debut for Creighton Vero, screenwriter of the indie cult hit 'Spun'.

For more information contact: pete@galaxie-pictures.com

SYNOPSIS:

Teenage Sherri, a new arrival to Lake Charles, Louisiana, gets a rude awakening as the locals give her a slice of real Southern hospitality, small town style. Included in her Lake Charles initiation are some hard lessons on friendship, family, and bigotry—not the kind made of ephemeral remarks and incidental ostracizing of outsiders, but real and vicious institutional racism, the kind that ends in murder.

Sherri arrives as the locals prepare for the funeral of Mary, the town’s Contraband Days Celebration Queen. With her death begins the shattering of the perfect picture of southern hospitality that she represents. Grieving is glossed over in favor of panic about the town’s quickly evaporating marijuana supply. What’s really died is the smiling welcoming south, and its warmth and hospitality are quickly replaced by a rapid growth of weeds.

Then the ensemble cast of Unfiltered gradually unwinds into a hard picture of gritty southern life as facades of tolerance gradually peel / crumble away. What’s revealed is the stuff that’s usually swept under the carpet.

MAKING MOVIES

THE FUTURE OF DRM.
Rights are overrated!
The so called copyright protection of intellectual property is an exercise in futility. Provided you have standing, you better have money to protect your interests in the courts, which can take forever. If you win, you see a dime on the dollar. Since you cannot copyright an idea, you're merely protecting the execution of an idea. The stated goals of many production companies are to infringe on copyrights and even though they are routinely answered with cease and decist demands, by then the damage is done. No point fighting on, there are no rewards.
The corporate trend among the majors is to intimidate the independent movie makers and their public by bringing out the big guns. They're the guns of Navarone and defeating them can kill you.
Don't be P2Ping the blockbusters.
So what's the future then for the little voices?
What if you have an idea?
What if you want to produce it and make money too?

STEALTH!
Technology will invent itself faster than law. The P2P debate proves that.
Stealth allows terrorists to have a blast. London proves that.
When pea shooters unite they become large visible weapons themselves and they can be defeated. You don't want that!
But STEALTH TECHNOLOGY will allow filmmakers to work under the radar. In and out movie productions will be fleeting on the air while the majors are still in post.
Millions of home bodies will dry their tears online!
The NEW DIGITAL DIRECTORS will replace the dying breed of copy writers. To save time, production assistants will write storyboards after the fact. There will be a rush of actors to become real people again and agents will go to casting calls. Cameras will have satellites and scrambled PayPall encoders built in and weekend revenues will be deposited in tax free accounts in Dubai.
Oh yeah, every independent film maker will have their own broadcast facility. Just like evangelists.
